CUSTOM TIES AND NECKWEAR

Once you've procured a collection of custom shirting, and suiting, you obviously need neckwear. A quality tie is the rally point of your entire ensemble; it draws attention, along with the pocket square. Like any other garment, ties come in many styles and levels of quality. The majority of ties are of course woven of silk, but there are many types of silk used to make a tie. Taffeta and Dupioni silk are often the most common types of silk recognised for proper tiemaking. The best quality silks are milled in "seterias" or silk shops in the regions of Lombardia, Piedmonte, and Emilia-Romagna of northern Italy. This is where House of Hawkes sources our silk for neckwear. Neck ties, bow ties, and even occasionally scarves and cravats are the most common styles available.

A proper necktie can be made in three-fold or seven-fold construction. This refers to the number of folds that are are required to make a necktie of the same silk. Three-fold neckwear is made both by hand and machine whereas seven-fold neckwear is completely hand-made reserved for the best quality silks. Retail neckties are not made in either form, nor are they made of pure silk. As such they easily often tear, rip, lose their finish, and/or become thread-bear over short periods of time. 

Lastly, the proper type of "interlining" inside the tie must be chosen. This is a piece of  canvas similar to what undergirds a full canvas jacket, and is usually made of a combination of cotton and linen. House of Hawkes uses the best quality Dutch linen interlining woven in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This provides the tie stability and a form to maintain over time. Interlining is standard to most ties, although some ties can be made "positano" without lining for lighter weight seasonal neckwear in the summer.
